History: The
Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS Ministry began in 1993 when four Ursuline
Sisters sponsored a spiritual support group for those challenged with
HIV/AIDS, their families, friends and those grieving their loved ones.
Mission: As
women of faith, committed to the Gospel, the Ursuline Sisters respond
with compassion and justice to the needs of all people touched by
HIV/AIDS.
Programs: The
ministry now serves almost 200 men, women and children infected of
affected by HIV/AIDS with the following programs:
- Pastoral visitation to homes and hospitals
- A speaker's bureau for presentations to professional, civic and church groups
- The Guardian Angel Cafe, a monthly dinner/social event for the HIV/AIDS community and their guests
- Angela's Place, a non-food pantry of household items and personal supplies
- A food pantry
- The Caring Connection, consisting of children's support
services, parent/guardian support services, transportation and Casa
Madre, our children's respite home and ministry site
- Comprehensive adult and pediatric HIV Care Center
We work closely with all of
the area HIV/AIDS agencies and professionals for outreach and
cooperative projects, the agency administering Ryan White Emergency
Assistance and HUD/HIV housing, and AIDS educators. None of those
agencies are duplicating services we provide. We administer our
regional Ryan White Consortium, the planning body responsible for
coordinating HIV health care and support services for Mahoning,
Trumbull, Columbiana and Jefferson counties. We also coordinate
extensively with other service agencies, businesses and Diocesan and
community programs that assist the poor and address issues of poverty.
